How to Drive Smart During The Holidays

Smart DriveWith winter in full swing, it’s important to stay safe on the roads as the temperature drops and the roads become icy. There are a number of steps that you can follow in order to stay as safe as possible on the roads this winter. Follow these top tips from James Flynn Insurance.

  • Have your car regularly serviced – make sure your car is in good condition and is road worthy during the winter months. A service will ensure the car has enough oil, windscreen fluid and other important things that are necessary throughout colder months.
  • Buy snow tires – if you live in a very snowy climate, you may want to consider investing in snow tires. Snow tires have special treads that cut through and grip to the snow, unlike regular tires. This allows the vehicle to have better traction. Due to the rubber that’s used to make them, they won’t freeze or become hard in colder temperatures.
  • Keep a very safe distance – when driving in winter conditions, keep a safe distance with the car in front of you. This should be double the distance you normally would keep. Be aware of the vehicles in front of you and look out for sudden brake lights. If you’ve kept your distance and need to do an emergency stop, you should be able to bring your vehicle to a safe stop with distance to spare.
  • Ease up on gas – if your car starts to slip while you’re trying to accelerate from a standstill, slowly ease up on the gas. Remember, the wheels have better traction when they are not slipping, so avoid slamming on the brakes.
